Senior WikiCity is an event organised by Wikimedia Czech Republic. The first such event took place in 2018 and is inspired by the classic WikiTown. In 2023, the event will take place in Lysá nad Labem from 15 to 17 September 2023. The event programme is aimed at seniors who have at least basic experience in editing Wikipedia and uploading images to Wikimedia Commons.
Despite the fact that the Senior WikiCity programme is primarily aimed at participants of the Seniors Write Wikipedia courses, it does not offer activities only for them. Local seniors can take part in two activities before the official launch, which will open the door for them to take part in the full Senior WikiCity programme. Among other things, they will have the chance to visit the Bon Repos Castle or the Benies Villa. The full programme can be found here.
They will also have their first chance to participate in WikiTown on Thursday, at a lecture entitled “Don’t you trust Wikipedia?”. “Is Wikipedia a serious source of information? Where has Wikipedia moved in its 20 years of existence? How is a new Wikipedia article created? Who writes Wikipedia? And where do they get the photos, videos, and audio?”
The lecture will take place on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at 6:00 pm at the Lysá nad Labem Library, admission is free.
For those who want to learn about Wikipedia in a practical way, we have then prepared an “introductory workshop on Wikipedia editing basics for newbies”, where they will learn the basics of Wikipedia editing, to the extent that graduates of this training will be able to join the rest of the official Senior WikiTown program together with already experienced Wikipedians.
The training will take place on Friday, September 15, 2023 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the attic of the local town hall, admission is free.
