At Palacký University in Olomouc, the Department of General Linguistics is launching a new course in the summer semester 2023/2024 with the acronym WIKI, which focuses on the use of Wikipedia for study. The course is intended for students in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in General Linguistics and related disciplines. It can be chosen as an elective by any student across the university.
The goal of the course is to introduce students to the rules and principles of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects, to learn and practice editing skills, and to produce an encyclopedia entry/article for Wikipedia during the semester. The passwords will be related to a knowledge database on linguistics and related topics. The passwords will be published on Wikipedia by the end of the semester under the supervision of the instructor. Prior knowledge in editing Wikipedia is not a prerequisite for participation in the course.
The form of instruction is face-to-face; please bring your own laptop. The readings for the course are listed on the course page on the STAG portal. The course will be held in a block on Thursdays from 15:00 to 17:00 in room 2.03 of the Department of General Linguistics. The instructor of the course is Mgr. Karel Čapka, who is a long-time Wikipedian and member of Wikimedia CR.
