Wikipedia oficially recognized as a Digital Public Goods

On February 12, 2025, Wikipedia was officially recognized as a digital public goods. The UNG-endorsed Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA) has included Wikipedia in the Registry of Public Goods. The DPGA is supported by the UN Secretary-General. The registry includes open-source software, open standards, open data, AI systems, and open content repositories that adhere to privacy principles, do no harm, and are highly relevant for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

The inclusion in the registry for Wikipedia is the result of advocacy activities by the movement in 2024. It strengthens its legitimacy at the UN level and affirms Wikipedia’s role in ensuring open access to verified information and recognition of its role in creating the internet for everyone.
